Home Care & Prevention Flashcards

1
Q

Why is preventative home care so important?

A

Professional dental cleanings eliminate calculus, however plaque begins reforming on the teeth 6-8 hrs after they are cleaned.
Calculus begins reforming within 3-5 days after a cleaning.
If clients do not continue to remove plaque at home, gingivits will progress and bacteria will colonize the subgingival sites. Subsequently, inflammatory mediators will be released causing inflammation/damage and further bacteria colonization will take place.

Q

T/F: hard food can prevent plaque and calculus formation

A

false – hard food alone will not prevent these things from forming, but can be an additive home care option.
The food is larger to allow for the teeth to have maximal contact and the food “scrubs” plaque on teeth surface.

Q

What is the biggest concern for dental chews?

A
  1. Safety concerns (choking)
  2. Do not reach all of the teeth.
  3. Dogs who choose to swallow them whole instead of chew them, they are ineffective.
  4. GI upset – excess protein, preservatives, grain alcohol and xylitol
  5. Some are high in calories
  6. Tooth fractures

Q

what is the “rule of thumb” for any pet chews?

A

if you stick your thumb nail into it, it should create an indentation. If it does not, it is too hard for your pet to safely chew on it.

Q

What 3 ingredients do water additives usually contain that are antiseptic, inhibit biofilm, inhibits calculus formation, and inhibits malodor?

A

Zinc chloride
Sodium citrate
Citric acid

17
Q

__________- binds to the tooths pellicle. This product is attracted to negative charge on bacteria. This product is released over a prolonged period of time which provides a sustained antimicrobial affect.

A

chlorhexidine – but its commonly within another vehicle like oral rinses, chews, or wipes.

18
Q

__________ are incorporated into toothpastes, rinses, and gels as antibacterial agents.

A

soluble zinc salts.

19
Q

What are the options for mechanical AND non-mechanical (combined) dental care?

A
  1. delmopinol
  2. polyphosphates
  3. toothpaste
  4. dental wipes
20
Q

________ is a chewable that contains anti-plaque surfactant. This reduces and delays dental plaque formation and can reverse gingivitis.

A

delmopinol

21
Q

How do polyphosphates work as preventative dental care?

A

they bind salivary calcium –> prevent calculus formation

22
Q

How does toothpaste serve as a combination (mechanical and non-mechanical) preventative product?

A

it contains calcium peroxide which dissolves the pellicle layer to decrease accumulation of plaque.

23
Q

How do dental wipes work?

A

infused wipes that mechanically remove plaque and supply plaque control agents to teeth and gingiva.

24
Q

how can we improve at home dental care?

A

educate our clients
