When may ATC assign holding instructions?
ATC may assign holding instructions to delay or separate traffic in the air for reasons such as weather or airport closures.
What is the standard direction of turn in a holding pattern?
- Right turns are standard
What is the standard degree of turns in a hold?
- 3 degree per second, or
- 30 degree bank angle, or
- 25 degree bank angle if using a Flight Director
system
*Whichever uses the least bank angle
How long should the inbound leg be if you are holding above 14,000’ MSL?
- 1.5 Minutes
How long should the inbound leg be if you are at and below 14,000’ MSL?
- 1 Minute
What is the holding speed restriction if you are flying at or below 6,000’ MSL?
- 200 Kts
What is the holding speed restriction if you are flying 6,001’ - 14,000’ MSL?
- 230 Kts
What is the holding speed restriction if you are flying 14,001 and above?
- 265 Kts
