When can you descend to the next instrument approach segment?
When cleared for the approach and established on a segment of a published approach or route.
What is a contact approach? Who can request them?
Requested by the pilot in lieu of an instrument approach. (Cannot be initiated by ATC)
How much visibility does a contact approach require?
Requires at least 1SM ground visibility and remain clear of clouds.
Where are contact approaches available?
Only at airports with approved instrument approach procedures.
Who is responsible for obstruction clearance?
Pilot assumes responsibility for obstruction clearance.
Who is a visual approach initiated by?
Initiated by either ATC or the pilot.
How much visibility must be available for a visual approach?
Requires at least 1000’ ceiling and 3SM visibility. (IFR under VMC)
What must the pilot have in sight to qualify for a visual approach?
The pilot must have either the airport or the traffic to follow in sight.
Who is responsible for traffic separation while on a visual approach?
The pilot is responsible for visual separation from traffic to follow.
When must you execute the Missed Approach?
- Arrival at MAP or DH with insufficient visual reference to runway environment.
- A safe approach is not possible.
- Instructed to do so by ATC.
