Cultural influence on language development
Cultures where adults speak directly to pre-linguistic children using CDS, those children produce single words than chunks, use more novel language (analytic). Overheard speech= produce large overheard speech that they later analyze (holistic approach)
influence of SES on language development
- education level, job prestige, and income
- Children from higher SES produce longer -responses to adult speech, score higher on standardized tests that address grammatical development, more complex utterances in spontaneous speech as toddlers-5yo. Perform better on productive and receptive syntax at age 6.
age of caregiver
no specific studies done, however children with adolescent mothers have lower IQ scores, which have substantial verbal component.
birth order
first born children have better vocabulary and syntax while later borns have better conversational skills
joint attention
children 14-15 mo who engage in joint attention develop language more rapidly than those who don’t

learn more vocab and more socialization skills from being around other children.
