HIV encephalopathy
Direct invasion of brain by virus
-normally occurs with profound immunosuppression
Presentation depends on location of virus in brain
Confusion
Memory, poor concentration
Impacts on mood
Behavioural changes
- apathy, social withdrawal
- agitation, anxiety, irritability, lability
Psychotic features
-delusions, hallucinations
Motor
-poor balance, limb weakness
Progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy
Common complication of AIDs, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s, sarcoidosis, leukemia
Disease of CNS => destruction of myelin sheath => diffuse white matter damage
The relationship between HIV and mental illness
Often associated with depression related to long term diagnosis
Pharmacological issues
SEs of medication
- depression
- fatigue
- psychosis
- suicidal ideation
- drowsiness
Common for HIV positive individuals to also be HepC positive
-interferon for Hep C management associated with depression
