HIV Flashcards
How does HIV travel in the body?
Infection of mucosal CD4+ cell (Langerhans and Dendritic cells)
Transport to regional lymph nodes (established within 3 days)
Symptoms of primary HIV infection
Fever
Rash (maculopapular)
Myalgia
Pharyngitis
Headache/aseptic meningitis
(onset average 2-4 weeks after infection)
Opportunistic infection =
Pathogen that does not normally cause disease on a healthy individual
Most common fungal infection in HIV =
Pneumocystis jirovecii
CD4 threshold for pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP)
<200
Slim’s disease =
HIV-related cachexia
Key cells in psoriasis (and therefore important in HIV)
CD8 cells
3 markers for HIV
Viral RNA
p24 antigen
Antibody
What viral load = no transmission of HIV ?
< 200cp/ml
Post-exposure prophylaxis
Start within 72 hours of high risk exposure
Combination ART taken for 4 weeks
