Definition of Manor System

What is the role of a peasant?
- Work land + provide food/services for upper class
- Peasants were not permitted to own land and lived under the protection of a lord
What is Feudalism?
A political system where the government was based on control of land
- Lords ruled over their own lands and armies of knights controlled the fief
- Kings would grant land (fief) to nobles (lords/vassals) in return for loyalty and military support
- Lords became more powerful than kings which increased land holdings
What was the Great Schism?
- The separation of the Catholic church of the West from the Orthodox churches of the East
- Split the main fraction of Christianity into two divisions, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox
What is Canon Law?
- A church’s set of laws, how the Church organizes and governs itself.
- A code of ecclesiastical (relating to the Christian Church or its clergy) laws governing the Catholic Church.

It defines and protects the rights and responsibilities of all people, according to their status in the Church.

The first written document with rules where the king was not above the law

- Limited the King’s power/Ultimate ruler was the law
- Set the basis for the Constitution and Bill of Rights

Global epidemic of the Bubonic Plague which spread through Europe, Asia, and North Africa
