Histology of the Skin Flashcards
The lining epithelium of the skin
Stratified squamous epithelium
The 3 layers of the skin
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis (or the deeper subcutaneous layer made of subcutaneous fat)
The 5 layers of the epidermis
Mnemonic: Chicks Look Good Sucking Balls
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum basale
Layer of the epidermis that is continuously shed, made of 15-20 layers of flattened non-nucleated keratinized/cornified cells
Stratum corneum
Layer of epidermis found only in areas of THICK, GLABROUS skin, described as a translucent layer of flattened eosinophilic cells
Stratum lucidum
Layer of epidermis made up of 3-5 layers of flattened polygonal cells, cytoplasm filled with basophilic masses called KERATOHYALINE GRANULES
Stratum granulosum
Layer of epidermis considered to be the thickest, made up of polyhedral cells synthesizing KERATIN FILAMENTS, forming bundles called TONOFIBRILS which converge and terminate at DESMOSOMES
Stratum spinosum
Layer of epidermis made up of a single layer of basophilic columnar/cuboidal cells along the basement membrane with intense MITOTIC ACTIVITY
Stratum basale
Skin cell found in the parenchyma, producing keratin
Keratinocyte
Skin cell found in the basal layer and junctional zone of the dermis, responsible for UV protection, containing tyrosinase for melanin production
Melanocyte
Dendritic cells found in the stratum spinosum of the skin, containing rod-shaped granules for immunity (antigen-presenting cell/APC)
Langerhans cell
