histology of blood Flashcards
1
Q
2 general components of blood
A
formed elements (45%) plasma (55%)
2
Q
features of plasma
A
liquid layer
90% water
soluble proteins , nutrients + salts
3
Q
what is serum
A
serum = plasma - clotting factors (proteins)
4
Q
3 branches of formed elements
A
1) Erythrocytes (RBC)
2) Leukocytes (WBC)
3) Platelets
5
Q
Features of RBC
A
7 micrometers diameter
- mature RBC have no nucleus or organelles, bi concave shape
- flexible cytoskeleton to allow them to fit through narrow lumen
6
Q
Reticulocytes + embryology
A
- immature blood cells
produced by hemopoiesis in bone marrow - week 3 produced in yolk sac
- 2nd trimester produced in liver + spleen
7
Q
2 types of leukocytes
A
granulocytes + agranulocytes
8
Q
features of granulocytes + 3 types
A
- have granules
- basophils
- eosinophils
- neutrophils
9
Q
features of neutrophils
A
- circle in active state
- prominent multilobed nucleus
- granules
- neutral charge so don’t stain well
- kill pathogen via phagocytosis, ROS, Degranulation + NETs
10
Q
Features of basophils
A
- very prominent granules
- high affinity for basic dyes
- bilobed nucleus (usually obscured by granules)
- stained blue/purple
11
Q
Features of eosinophils
A
- prominent granules
- affinity for red acidic dye
- bilobed nucleus
12
Q
Features of agranulocytes + examples
A
- don’t have granules
- macrophages + lymphocytes
13
Q
features of macrophages
A
precursor = monocyte
- agranular
- large kidney bean shaped nucleus
14
Q
features of lymphocytes
A
- agranular
- large round nucleus
- little cytoplasm surrounding nucleus
15
Q
features of platelets
A
- small cell fragments
- well developed cytoskeleton
- no nucleus but conspicuous granules + some organelles
