Histology Lecture 1 - Intro to Methods and Stains Flashcards
What charge does a basic dye carry?
A POSITIVE charge, because it has picked up a proton.
What charge does an acidic dye carry?
A NEGATIVE charge, because it has lost a proton.
Name two examples of basic dyes.
Toluidine blue and hematoxylin.
Name an example of an acidic dye.
Eosin.
What type of molecules have affinity for basic dyes?
Negatively charged molecules.
What type of molecules have affinity for acidic dyes?
Positively charged molecules.
What does a Periodic-acid Schiff stain dye?
Structures rich in carbohydrates.
What do silver stains dye?
Nerve cell processes and reticular fibers
What does Masson’s trichrome stain do?
It is a three-colored stain that distinguishes cells from their surrounding extracellular matrix.
What is metachromasia?
A phenomenon that results in a change in dye color due to interaction between basic dye (like toluidine blue) and polyanions.
