Histology Flashcards
What are the three components of blood?
White Blood Cells, Red Blood Cells and Plasma
What are platelets and where are they located?
Found suspended in plasma and are coagulators
Two types of Leukocytes?
Granulocytes and Agranulocytes
Name X3 Types of Granulocytes
Neutrophils, Basophils and Eosinophils
Name X2 Types of Agranulocytes
Lymphocytes and Monocytes
X3 Components of plasma
Platelets (Platelet-proteins), Nutrients and water
Rate in order of density three components of blood
Most dense-Red Blood Cells
Dense- White Blood cells
Least Dense- Plasma
What is the name for liquid leftover when blood has been separated using a centrifuge?
Serum
What are Erythrocytes ?
Red Blood Cells
What protein do Red Blood Cells Contain?
Haemeglobin group
What prosthetic group in haemoglobin allows for the binding of oxygen to red blood cells?
Haem
What Granulocyte has a multi-lobed nucleus?
Neutrophils
What Granulocytes have a bi-lobed nucleus?
Eosinophils and Basophils
What is the most common type of Granulocyte?
Neutrophil
What is the least common type of Granulocyte?
Basophil
What is found in Eosinophil Granules?
Hydrolytic Enzymes
What Is found in Basophil Granules?
Inflammatory Mediators- Histamines
-Heparin activates Mediators
What type of Granulocyte white blood cell forms phagocytes?
Neutrophils
What type of nucleus do Lymphocytes have?
Large round nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm
What type of nucleus do Monocytes have?
Non-Lobulated Nucleus
What are Macrophages derived from?
- Type of white blood cell
- Monocytes
Function of macrophages?
- Phagocytosis
- Presenting Antigens
What is the difference between Granulocytes and Agranulocytes?
Granulocytes- Contain distinct granules
Agranulocytes- Contain granules that are NOT distinct/obvious
What is the function of platelets?
- Coagulants- clot blood
- Coagulants are found in their granules
- Prevent blood loss- Hemostatsis
Term used to describe prevention of blood loss?
Hemostasis - ‘Stay-blood’
What is the process ‘Hemopoiesis?’
-Production of blood cells - WHITE + RED
Where does Hemopiesis take place?
- Gestation- spleen and liver
- After birth- Bone marrow - e.g B Lymphocytes
