Histology Flashcards
Histology
The study of tissues
Tissue
A collection of specialized cells that perform a common function.
Four main types of cells
Epithelial, connective,muscle , and neural
Epithelial tissue
Layers of cells that cover exposed surfaces and line internal passage ways.
4 Functions
Provide physical protection,
controlling permeability,
providing sensation,
specialized secretions
Exocrine
Discharge onto the epithelial surface
Endocrine
Released into the surrounding tissues and blood
Hormones
Regulate the activities of the other tissue, organs, and organ systems
The 8 types of tissue
Simple squamous Simple cuboidal Simple columnar Pseudostratified ciliated Stratified squamous Stratified cuboidal Stratified columnar Transitional epithelium
Where is a Simple squamous found
Lines inside of blood and lymph muscles
Simple cuboidal
Lines pancreas and liver
Simple columnar
Ciliated
Lines female reproductive tract
Non ciliated simple columnar
Uterus and digestive tract
Pseudostratified ciliated
Lines the respiratory system
Stratified squamous
Lines the oral cavity
Stratified cuboidal
Mammary glands and sweat glands
Stratified columnar
Male urethra
Connective tissue
Bone, tendon, ligaments, cartilage, blood fat.
Connective tissue function
Provides support and protection
Transports materials
Storing energy
Defending the body
Components of connective tissue
Specialized cells
Extra cellular fibers
Ground substance
Connective cells
Bone and blood
Extra cellular fibers
H
Ground substance
Fluid that varies in consistency
Three types of connective tissue
Connective tissue proper
Fluid connective tissue
Supporting connective tissue
