Histology Flashcards
Epithelial tissue
Covers the body surface, lines internal organs, and forms glands
Functions in protection, absorption, secretion
Apical surface
Free exposed edge
Lateral surface
Contacts adjacent epithelial cells
Basal surface
Contracts basement membrane
Basement membrane
Connects epithelial tissue to underlying tissue
Stratified
Multiple layers
Simple
Single layer
Squamous
Flat
Cuboidal
Tall as it is wide
Columnar
Taller than it is wide
Simple squamous epithelium
Single layer of flat cells
Forms very thin delicate membranes
Allows for easy movement of molecules across the membrane
Found in kidney glomeruli, alveoli of the lungs, lining of the heart, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, serous membrane
Simple cubodial epithelium
Single layer of cube shaped cell
Capable of secretion and absorption
Found in kidney tubules, small ducts and glands, and covering the ovary
