Histology Flashcards
Describe the structure of a sarcomere
- Under contraction, dark band does not shorten, only H and I band shortens
What are the three types of skeletal muscle fibres and describe them.
Type I - slow contracting, oxidative metabolism, abundant mitochondria & myoglobin; resistant to fatigue/produce lesser force
Type IIa - intermediate
Type IIb - fast contracting, anaerobic metabolism, few mitochondria & less myoglobin; fatigued easily/produce greater force
What is lacuna?
What is the extracellular matrix component of hyaline cartilage?
75% water
25% organic material (60% type II collagen - a 3D meshwork + 40% proteoglycan)
Compare and contrast three types of cartilage
Describe and compare Haversian system and Volkmann’s canal in compact bone
Describe and contrast structure of compact and trabecular bones
Describe the four types of cells of bones
