Histology Flashcards
Tight Junctions
gate/fence function, cells at the tight junction appear fused
Adherens Junction
cadherins link the cell together, connected to actin filaments in cell, involved in tissue morphogenesis and cell-cell communication
Desmosome
adhesion molecule is cadherins, associates with keratin intermediate filaments, involved with cell-cell adhesion and signalling
Gap Junction
6 connexins make one connexon, allows the passage of small molecules from cell to cell such as ions, sugars, amino acids and nucleotides
Hemidesmosomes
link epithelial cells to the BM, attached to keratin, involved in signalling and cell adhesion
Microvilli
found on simple columnar, referred to as brush border, found in gut tissue, arise from terminal web of actin, important for absorption
Cilia
microtubule arrangement, found in airways, arise from basal bodies
Stereocilia
thin long extensions of the apical surface and contain actin filaments at their core
Special connective tissue
cartilage, bone, fat, blood
Collagen
1 alpha chain–>3 alpha chains–>fibril–>fiber–>parallel arrays, patches, and meshwork
Vitamin C is required for hydrogen bonds to form between alpha chains
Triple Helix formed from C to N terminal
Collagen molecule assemble head to tail
Serous Acini
Mucous Acini
Nuclei are central, clusters of secretory cells filled with dark staining granules
Nuclei are flattened and displaced to the basal aspect of the cell near the surface of the acini
