What are the layers of the GI track wall from innermost to outermost?
Mucosa > Submucosa > Muscularis Externa > Adventitia/Serosa
The mucosa has 3 primary functions…
secretion, absorption, protection
The submucosa contains:
lymph, nerves, occasional glands
What kind of epithelium does the esophagus have?
SS pseudostratified epithelium
What does the esophageal mucosa contain?
GALT, esophageal cardiac glands
Describe the muscular layer distribution of the esophagus.
Upper 1/3 = skeletal, Middle 1/3 = mixed, Lower 1/3 = smooth muscle
Gastroesophageal reflux results from problems with which esophageal sphincter?
the inferior one
What type of epithelium does the stomach have?
simple columnar
What’s special about the stomach mucosa?
3 layers - inner oblique, middle circular, outer longitudinal
What organ has surface mucosal cells and gastric pits?
stomach
What cell types are found in the gastric pits?
Mucous neck cells, chief cells (pepsinogen), parietal cells (HCl), enteroendocrine cells, regenerative cells
Where does cell renewal occur in the stomach?
The isthmus of the gastric pits
What 3 aspects of the small intestine increase surface area?
Plicae circulares, Villi, Microvilli
Primary absorptive cells of the small intestine?
Enterocytes
Where are paneth cells and what do they do?
Small Intestine Epithelium, have acidic granules and can secrete lysozyme, also phagocytize certain bacteria
