The term for all Muslims as a community. community of belivers/ band of the faithful

Tribal allegiance is the most important.
What is the religious system muhammad developed like?
Belief over birth, territory, or language. Outlaws usury (loaning money at interest), tax free market place, manditory payment to suppory the poor.

battle that occurred when the people of Mecca attacked the people of Medina, and Muhammad decided that it is appropriate to fight if defensive
What is the difference between “Islam” and “Muslim”?
Islam is the religion (submission to Allah). Muslims are the followers
What are Caliphs?
Keep the religion alive and spread it, Muhammad’s successor.
What is sharia?
Islamic law; a combination of the Quran and the Hadith.
who are ulama’s?
Islamic religious scholars
Who came to power after the first four caliphs?
Umayyads (in power almost 100 years). Only arab muslims could hold office
What are the five pillars of islam?
Declaration of Belif (no god but Allah and muhammad is his profit). Pray 5 times a day towards mecca. Fast during month of ramada. Take a Hajj to mecca. Give charity
Who were the abbasids?
Resistance Group to the Umayyads (popular with none-Arab muslims). Islam and Arab are not interchangeable. Shift the capital to bagdad
Caliphate
Office established in succession to the Prophet Muhammad, to rule the Islamic empire; also the name of that empire.

collected and focused on communities and preserving text. Arabic is the language of learning
