What is greater trochanteric pain syndrome?
A
AKA trochanteric bursitis
Inflammation of the bursa between greater trochanter and fascia lata caused by acute or repetitive trauma
More common in women and active patients

What are the symptoms?
A
Hip pain that radiates down lateral side of thigh to knee
Pain worse on movement and at night

What are the signs?
A
Point tenderness when palpating greater trochanter
Knee slightly flexed and active adduction of slightly flexed hip across midline produces pain

What is the management?
A
Steroid injections helpful
Physio to stretch fascia lata
Rarely surgery
