What is a vertebral fracture?

A

Wedge compression fracture of thoracolumbar spine

Can occur with minimal trauma in patients with osteoporosis

Due to excessive spinal flexion with posterior ligaments remaining in tact causing anterior fractures

A

Marked pain
Pain worse on movement and weight bearing
Pain slowly improves over months

A

What is the management of vertebral XR?

A

Bed rest for 1-2wks until pain subsides

Conservative

  • mobilisation and muscle strengthening exercises
  • if >25% anterior height loss then brace for 3 months

Surgical

  • Kyphoplasty- cement injected into collapsed vertebra
  • indicated if ongoing pain at level of fracture
