Vertebral Fractures Flashcards
What is a vertebral fracture?
Wedge compression fracture of thoracolumbar spine
Can occur with minimal trauma in patients with osteoporosis
Due to excessive spinal flexion with posterior ligaments remaining in tact causing anterior fractures
What are symptoms of vertebral fractures?
Marked pain
Pain worse on movement and weight bearing
Pain slowly improves over months
What investigations are needed for vertebral fractures?
AP and Lateral XR
What is the management of vertebral XR?
Bed rest for 1-2wks until pain subsides
Conservative
- mobilisation and muscle strengthening exercises
- if >25% anterior height loss then brace for 3 months
Surgical
- Kyphoplasty- cement injected into collapsed vertebra
- indicated if ongoing pain at level of fracture
What is a Jeffersons fracture?
C1 fracture due to axial compression on skull transmitted to spine
Open mouth XR to diagnose
What is Hangmans fracture?
C2 fracture due to hyperextension of neck
