Pathology of Hip OA

A
  • general wear and tear mainly affecting the articulatory cartilage
  • Osteoarthritis commonly affects the articular cartilage of synovial joints
  • loss of this cartilage causes bones to rub against each other
  • (causing inflammation and pain)
  • chondrocytes maintain a balance of breaking down and producing cartilage using enzymes
  • increase in degradative enzymes occurs
  • osteophytes are also formed

  • pain in groin/thigh area radiating to knee/buttocks

- stiffness (usually morning)

  • passive movement to increase joint flexibility

  • intracapsular: from subcapital region of the femoral head to the basicervical region of femoral neck
  • extracapsular: outside of the capsule
