Hip & Gluteal Region Flashcards
Obturator Internus
O: pelvic surface of obturator membrane & surrounding bones
I: medial surface of greater trochanter of femur
N: nerve to obturator internus (L5,S1)
V: inferior gluteal a., internal pudendual a., medial circumflex femoral a.
A: lateral rotation, abduction of thigh
Piriformis
O: anterior sacrum/sacrotuberous ligament
I: superior border of greater trochanter of femur
N: anterior rami (S1,S2)
V: superior and inferior gluteal aa./internal pudendal a.
A: lateral rotation, abduction of thigh
Obturator externus
O: outer surface of obturator membrane & surrounding bones
I: medial surface of greater trochanter of femur
N: obturator n. (L3,4)
V: obturator a., medial circumflex femoral a.
A: abduct, laterally rotate thigh
Superior gemellus
O: ischial spine I: medial surface of greater trochanter of femur N: nerve to obturator internus (L5,S1) V: inferior gluteal a. A: abduction, lateral rotation of thigh
Inferior gemellus
O: ischial tuberosity I: medial surface of greater trochanter of femur N: nerve to quadratus femoris (L5,S1) V: inferior gluteal a. A: abduction, lateral rotation of thigh
Quadratus femoris
O: lateral border of ischial tuberosity
I: quadrate tubercle on intertrochanteric crest of femur
N: nerve to quadratus femoris (L5,S1)
V: med/lat circumflex femoral and inferior gluteal aa.
A: abduct, laterally rotate thigh
Gluteus Maximus
O: ilium posterior to posterior glut line, dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx, & sacrotuberous lig
I: illiotibial tract, some fibers insert in glut tuberosity
N: inferior gluteal n. (L5,S1,2)
V: inferior gluteal a (may also get superior)
A: extends thigh esp from flexed position and assists lat rotation. Steadies thigh and assists rising from seated position
Gluteus medius
O: external surface of ilium b/w ant and post gluteal lines
I: lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
N: superior gluteal n. (L5,S1)
V: superior gluteal a
A: abduct & medially rotate thigh. Keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advances opposite side during swing phase
Gluteus minimus
O: external surface of ilium b/w ant & inf glut lines
I: anterior surface of greater trochanter of femur
N: superior gluteal n. (L5,S1)
V: superior gluteal a
A: abduct and medially rotate thigh, keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advances opposite side during swing phase
Tensor fascia lata
O: anterior superior iliac spine, anterior part of iliac crest
I: illiotibial tract
N: superior gluteal n (L5,S1)
V: superior gluteal a.
A: abduct and medially rotate thigh, keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advances opposite side during swing phase
