what are the 2 main types of hip fracture?
intracapsular (neck)
extracapsular (across greater trochanter)
what are the types of extracapsular fractures?
basicervical
intertrochanteric
Reverse oblique
subtrochanteric
what is the treatment for low function intracapsular hip fracture? (e.g. care home patient with low mobility)
hemiarthroplasty
what is the treatment for a high function intracapsular hip fracture? (e.g. active patient)
if femur is undisplaced- compression hip screw
if femur is displaced- total hip replacement
what is the treatment for extracapsular hip fracture?
intertrochanteric- dynamic hip screw
subtrochanteric- intramedullary nail
what are complications of extracapsular hip fractures?
non union or malunion
