common fractures Flashcards
what are the different classifications of ankle fractures?
Weber A, B and C
what is the difference between a weber A, B and C fracture?
A - fibular fracture below the level of the syndesmosis
B - at the level of the syndesmosis
C - above the level of the syndesmosis
what are the management options for ankle fractures?
conservative - cast or moonboot
operative - open reduction internal fixation (ORIF)
what are the different tibial shaft fracture configurations and how do they happen?
transverse (straight across) - tension
oblique (diagonally across) - compression
butterfly (sideways Y shape) - bending
spiral - torsion
what are the treatment options for tibial shaft fractures?
conservative- above the knee cast
operative - IM nail, open reduction internal fixation
describe tibial plateau fractures
fracture at the top of the tibia at one side, common high energy injuries in young people and low energy in old.
associated risk of neurovascular injury of popliteal structures or common peroneal nerve
what are the treatment options for tibial plateau fracture?
conservative - above knee cast
operative - ORIF, external fixation, delayed total knee replacement
what is the treatment for femoral shaft fractures?
usually operative - IM nail or ORIF
what is the initial management for high energy pelvic injuries?
pelvic binder
what is the most common cause of a distal radius fracture?
fall on outsretched hand (FOOSH)
what are the different distal radius fracture patterns?
colles, smith’s, barton’s
what are the treatment options of distal radius fractures?
conservative - cast / splint
operative - ORIF / MUA & K wires / external fix
what is a galeazzi fracture?
fracture of the distal part of theradiuswith dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint and intact ulna
what is a monteggia fracture?
fracture of the ulnar shaft with concomitant dislocation of the radial head
what is a nightstick fracture?
isolated fracture of the ulna
