Hip Flashcards
1
Q
Hip Conditions
A
Tight or weak muscles in the hip/pelvis region can cause a number of biomechanical problems and cause pain or discomfort in and of themselves.
2
Q
For the following muscle groups develop exercises that will:
A
- Lengthen the Group
- Teach the hip to use the new muscle
length. - Ask the muscle or group to perform
in a functional manner to enhance NMC.
3
Q
Hip Abductor Function
A
- Includes gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and tensor fascia lata.
- Decelerates pronation at the hip (internal rotation, adduction).
- Decelerates pronation at the knee (internal rotation).
4
Q
Hip Adductor Function
A
- Includes gracilis, pectineus, adductor magnus, adductor longus and adductor brevis.
- Decelerates pronation at the hip (flexion, internal rotation).
5
Q
Hip External Rotator Function
A
- Includes piriformis, gemelli, and obturator internus.
- Decelerates pronation at the hip (internal rotation).
6
Q
Hip Flexor Function
A
- Includes psoas major and iliacus.
- Decelerates pronation at the hip (internal rotation).
7
Q
Piriformis Syndrome
A
- Spasm or hypertrophy of the piriformis that places pressure on the sciatic nerve (L4-S3).
8
Q
Piriformis Syndrome: Common Problems/Limitations
A
- Pain, parenthesia in the lateral lower leg and foot
- Weakness
- Diminished IR
9
Q
IT Band Friction Syndrome
A
- ITB/TFL is tight and rubs on the femoral condyle causing lateral knee pain.
- IT band and bursa between the IT band the femoral epicondyle can become inflamed.
10
Q
Snapping Hip Syndrome
A
- Chronic inflammation of the trochanteric bursa causes the IT band to snap as it moves over the greater trochanter.
11
Q
IT Band Friction/Snapping Hip Syndromes: Common Problems/Limitations
A
- Pain at the lateral femoral epicondyle/greater trochanter.
- Weakness
- Hypomobility
- Valgus may cause more discomfort due to a stretch on the IT Band (Snapping Hip)
~ Caused by weak abductors
12
Q
What to do when Pelvic Rotations are present?
A
- MET
- Manipulation
13
Q
What to do when SI Joint Sprain is present?
A
- Strengthen glute max
14
Q
What to do when Hip Degeneration is present?
A
