Aquatics Flashcards
1
Q
Aquatics
A
- Use of multi-depth immersion pools or tanks that facilitate the application of established therapeutic exercise techniques: eliminates gravity
~ Enhances ROM
~ Provides Mild Resistance
~ Allows for Non-Weight Bearing
Cardiorespiratory Training
~ Allows for Early Functional Activity
> Pt. may be too weak/unstable on
dry land
2
Q
Aquatics: Precautions
A
- Fear of Water
- Seizures: ok to rehab in water
- Open Wounds
3
Q
Aquatics: Contraindications
A
- Danger of Bleeding or Hemorrhage
- Fungal Infections
- Water and Airborne Infections: influenza, gastrointestinal infections.
- Uncontrolled Seizures: not ok to rehab in warer
4
Q
Properties of Water: Buoyancy
A
- Upward force that works opposite to gravity
- Provides the patient with relative weightlessness and joint unloading.
- Resistance percentages: C7 = 8%, Xiphoid = 33%, ASIS = 50%
5
Q
Properties of Water: Hydrostatic Pressure
A
- Pressure exerted on immersed objects
- May reduce swelling by assisting with venous/lymphatic return
6
Q
Properties of Water: Viscosity
A
- Friction occurring between molecules of liquid resulting in resistance to flow
- Creates resistance with all active movements
- Increasing surface area will increase resistance
7
Q
Special Equipment
A
- Swim Bars
~ Buoyant Dumbbells
~ Used mostly to support the body or
challenge balance ability in the water. - Gloves, Hand Paddles,
Hydrotone Bells/Boots, Fins
~ Increases resistance by increasing
area moving through the water. - Collars, Rings, Belts and Vests
~ Used to assist the patient with
positioning.
~ Collars - Used with the patient supine
to support the neck and keep head
out of water.
~ Rings - Support the extremities.
~ Belts and Vests - Used to position
patient supine, prone or vertically.
