samsara is the cycle of reincarnation you can be reborn at different levels of the caste system or as an animal
what is the goal of hinduism?
the goal of hinduism is to escape samsara through moksha
moksha is when you attain enough good karma to escape the cycle of samsara and reunite with the soul of brahman, the supreme being and creator of the universe
what is the atman?
the soul
this soul travels throughout the cycle of samsara
what is karma?
karma is the concept that good actions lead to good consequences and bad actions lead to bad consequences
what is dharma?
dharma is rules and way of life
it is the way to act in order to attain good karma
it includes acting respectively to your caste
what type of religion is hinduism?
monism
it has many different deities but one main creator god
what is an avatar in hinduism?
an incarnation of a deity in human/animal form on earth to counteract evil
what are the three main hindu deities?
brahma, the creator
vishnu, the preserver
shiva, the destroyer
what are the levels of the hindu caste system?
brahmins: priests and teachers
kshatriyas: warriors, rulers
vaishyas: artisans, merchants, farmers
shudras: laborers
dalits(untouchables): people who work with garbage or dead people
what happened to the caste system in india?
discrimination based on the caste system was deemed illegal in 1948
