A

siddhartha gautama was a wealthy prince and it was prophesied that he would either be a good ruler or a holy man
the king wanted him to become a ruler so he prevented him from leaving the palace.
however he left and saw an old man, a sick man, a dead man, and a holy man so he left the palace and decided to find the cause of suffering

A

ashoka was the third ruler of the mauryan empire
he was originally a very cruel leader known for his torture chamber called hell on earth and it was even rumored that he killed his brothers to attain the throne
however, after his empire destroyed the kingdom of kalinga and ashoka walked through the ruins he had a change of heart and turned to buddhism, making monuments all around the empire

they are proclamations about how he is going to rule and other core concepts he believes in

cant spread more specific buddhist things due to pluralistic society, but can spread basic values that can be interpreted by everyone

A

the third eye, urna: a dot on forehead symbolizing enlightenment
curly hair: cut off hair which then later regrew into curls that he never had to cut again
long ears: elongated from earrings he had when he was wealthy
gently closed eyes: expression of peace, not aggresively shut
monk robe: symbolizes renouncing wealth, simple robes
lotus position: legs crossed feet on top, symbol of meditation and non action
mudras: hand gestures, some means stuff like meditation, fearlessness, compassion, and debate
