High & Low Energy Coasts Flashcards
1
Q
High Energy Coast Features
A
-Wave power is strong for a most of the year.
-Controlled by fetch and alignment of coast.
-Storm winds generate the largest waves (resulting in storm waves).
E.g. In the UK, the WEST COAST is a higher energy coastline than the EAST COAST
2
Q
Low Energy Coast Features
A
- Wave energy is lower in sheltered environments e.g. Bays
- > result of divergence of orthogonal in bays
- Coastlines with limited fetch are low energy coasts e.g. East Coast
- Sheltered dates like the Mediterranean and Baltic have a limited tidal range and a low energy sheltered environment.
3
Q
Air Pressure causing High Energy Coasts
A
Tropical maritime air shoots over polar maritime air resulting in low air pressure causing stormy weather conditions.
