Coastal System Flashcards
What is the BACKSHORE?
Area between high water mark and landward limit of marine activity (e.g. Cliff face)
What is the FORESHORE?
Area between high and low water mark and seen as the most important area for marine activity.
What is the INSHORE?
Area between low water mark and where waves cease to have influence on the land around them (e.g. End of beach material)
What is the OFFSHORE?
Area beyond the point where waves cease to impact the seabed and activity is limited to deposition of sediment.
What are the INPUTS of a coastal system?
- Energy from waves, wind currents and tides.
- Sediment from other coastlines, rivers, and sub-aerial processes are deposited.
- Human activity also provides inputs.
What are the PROCESSES of a coastal system?
- Erosion, transportation and deposition takes place along the coastline.
- e.g. Longshore drift, biological activity, wind activity (aeolian)
What are the OUTPUTS of the coastal system?
-Landforms, sediment and shape and position of coastline after eroded.
