Sliding (80%)
Rolling (20%)

What is a sliding hiatus hernia?
A
Gastro-oesophageal junction slides up into the chest through the oesophageal hiatus

What is a rolling hernia?
A
The gastro-oesophageal junction remains in the abdomen but a bulge of the stomach pushes up through the hiatus next to the oesophagus

What are the clinical features of a hiatus hernia?
A
Often asymptomatic.
Most common in the obese.
Sometimes GORD

What tests do we do for hiatus hernia?
A
Endoscopy
CT contrast

What is the treatment for hiatus hernias?
A
Treat GORD
Lose weight
Surgery if aggressive and not improving and at high risk of strangulation
