What are the signs and symptoms of hiatal hernia?
- Palpitations - irritation of vagus
- SOB
- Chest pain
- Acid Reflux
What is the congenital form of a hiatal hernia in infants?
Bochdalek hernia
Can it be asymptomatic?
Yes
What are the risk factors for Hiatal Hernia?
Increased abdominal pressure
- Heavy lifting
- Frequent cough
- Hard sneezing
- Violent vomiting
- Straining
- Stress
What is used for diagnosis?
- Endoscopy
- High resolution manometer
- CT
What are the different types of hernia?
- Sliding hernia
- Rolling hernia
What is the treatment of hiatal hernia?
Most cases no treatment for people that don’t have discomfort
- Reduce stress
- weight loss
- PPI, H2 blockers
- Surgery in very severe cases or is at risk of barrett’s oesophagus
What are the complications to surgery?
- Death
- Gas bloat syndrome
- Dysphagia
- Dumpling syndrome
- Achalasia
What is dumpling syndrome?
When food moves too fast from the stomach to the duodenum. Releasing undigested food.
What is gas bloat syndrome?
Air and gas builds up in the GI tract causing discomfort
What is nissen fundoplication?
Another treatment for hiatal hernia where the fundus of the stomach is wrapped around the oesophagus. This prevents herniation. Commonly done Add to dictionary.
