Epigastric, femoral, inguinal, incisional, umbilical
What is a hernia?
Abnormal protrusion of a viscus out of its normal body cavity
What can irreducible hernia cause?
Strangulation/obstruction of lumen
Causes of hernia
Intra-abdo pressure
- pregnancy
- straining (lifting, constipation)
- coughing
Where is a femoral hernia?
Below and later to pubic tubercle (more common in women)
Where is a direct inguinal hernia?
Medial to inferior epigastric vessels
Where is indirect inguinal hernia?
Lateral to inferior epigastric vessels
Where are inguinal hernia in general found?
Above and medial to pubic tubercle

- Open surgery - lichtenstein

Who are direct and indirect hernia more common in?
Direct - old men
Indirect - young men
What can an indirect inguinal hernia be caused by?
Patent processus vaginalis - what the testes descend through
Who do epigastric hernia commonly affect?
Children (males more)
Why do epigastric hernia occur?
Congenital malformation/midline weakness of line alba
What is rare complication of leaving a hernia untreated?
Incarceration
