Hernias Flashcards
List the two different types of abdominal wall hernias
- ventral hernias: epigastri, umbilical, incisional
- groin hernias: inguinal, femoral
Define a hernia
any exit of an organ through the wall of its cavity (sac of peritoneum containing fat/bowel)
- abdominal or groin
- inguinal is most common
Describe how to reduce a hernia
- tendelenberg position
- ice pack over bulge
- +/- narcotics/BZD
- slow steady pressure from periphery
- allow their breathing motion to work with you
- DO NOT FORCE IT
What are the risk factors for developing a hernia
Describe the presentation of a hernia
Describe incarceration of a hernia
trapping of abd contents within hernia, swollen, can’t be reduced or pushed back = surgical
Describe a strangulated hernia
decrease in blood supply of intestine, occurs after incarceration, emergent surgery (risk of gangrene, tissue death, mortality)
Describe the etiology & RF for an inguinal hernia
Describe the presentation & PE of an inguinal hernia
Describe the treatment for an inguinal hernia
Describe the etiology & RF for a femoral hernia
Describe the presentation of a femoral hernia
