- Males are 20 times more commonly affected with inguinal hernias when compared to females.
- In adult males 65% of inguinal hernias are indirect and 55% are right-sided.
- In 12% of cases the hernia is bilateral.
- Direct hernias become more common as patients get older.
Describe the Pain Ladder.
▪ Step 1: Simple analgesics e.g. aspirin, paracetamol, NSAIDs +/- adjuncts
▪ Step 2: weak opioids e.g. codeine, tramadol +/- adjuncts
▪ Step 3: strong opioids e.g. morphine, fentanyl +/- adjuncts
