define hernia
a protrusion of viscus or part of a viscus through an abnormal opening in the walls of its containing cavity
types of hernias
common:
epigastric
umbilical
incisional
inguinal
femoral
less common:
spigelian
obturator
gluteal lumbar
reducible hernia
irreducible hernia
strangulated hernia
blood supply of hernia contents are compromised
hernia contents will be dead
obstructed hernia
lumen of the herniated intestine is obstructed (as opposed to strangulated which relates to blood supply)
risk factors for hernia
anything that raises intra abdominal pressure
- chronic cough
- prostatic obstruction
- constipation
- pregnancy
- ascites
- weak abdominal muscles
or congenital issues
DDx for groin mass presentation
L-SHAPE
Lymph node
Saphenovarix
Hernia (inguinal or femoral)
Aneurysm of femoral artery
Psoas abscess/pathology
Ectopic testicle
