christology
literally, “the understanding of Christ”, is the study of the nature (person) and work (role in salvation) of Jesus Christ. It studies Jesus Christ’s humanity and divinity, and the relation between these two aspects; and the role He plays in salvation
heresy
belief or opinion contrary to the orthodox religious doctrine
orthodoxy
the adherence to correct or accepted creeds, especially in religion. In the Christian sense of the term means “conforming to the Christian faith as represented in the creeds of the Early Christian Church”
doctrine
a belief or set of beliefs that held and taught by a Church (religion)
anathema
a formal curse by the Pope or Church Council excommunicating a person or denoucing a doctrine
ecclesial
relating to or constituting a Church or denomination; its functions, teachings, and organisations
ecclesiastical
relating to the Christian Church or its clergy, from the Greek word ekklesiasties, meaning “speaker in an assembly or church”
schism
a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties caused by very strong differences in opinion of belief. Formal seperation of a Church into two owing to doctrinal diffeerences, or the succession of a Church
synod
a council of a church, usually convened to decide an issue of doctrine, administration or application. The word ‘synod’ comes from teh Greek ‘synodos’ meaning ‘assembly’ or ‘meeting’, and it is synonymous with the Latin word ‘concilium’ meaning ‘council’
deacon
(historical) a messenger or minister below that of an ordained priest
presbyter
(historical) an elder or minister of the Christian Church
ecumenical council
a conference of ecclesiastical dignitaries and theological experts convened to discuss and settle matters of Church doctrine and practice in whose entitled vote are convoked from the whole world (oikoumene) and which secures the approbation of the whole Church
