heredity Flashcards
heredity
the passing of genetic traits from parents to offspring
dominant trait
In genetics, a trait that will appear in the offspring if one of the parents contributes it.
recessive trait
Recessive traits can be carried in a person’s genes without appearing in that person.
Genes
a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring.
Alleles
one of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
phenotype
the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype
Genotype
the genetic constitution of an individual organism.
probabilty
the likelihood of something happening or being the case.
Meiosis
a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.
Sex chromosomes
a chromosome involved with determining the sex of an organism, typically one of two kinds.
Pedigree
the record of descent of an animal, showing it to be purebred.
DNA
the fundamental and distinctive characteristics or qualities of someone or something.
Nucleotide
compound consisting of a nucleoside linked to a phosphate group.
Mutations
the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations.
