Heredity Flashcards
What is heratibility?
The proportion of total variation between individuals in a given population that is due to genetic variation.
What is a gene?
A locus (or region) of DNA that ecodes a functional RNA or protein product.
What is an allele?
An alternative form of a gene (one member of a pair) that is located at a specific positional on a specific chromosome.
What is a monohybrid cross?
A cross between two parents that differ in a single characteristic.
What is the principle of segregation?
Each individual diploid organism posseses two alleles for any particular charactetistic and only one is passed to offspring.
What is idependent assortment?
Alleles segregate independently when gametes are formed.
what is the concept of dominance?
When two different alleles are present in a genotpe, only the trait encoded by one of them, the dominant allele, is observed in the phenotype.
What is heredity?
The passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another.
