Heredity Flashcards
What is a trait?
Unique characteristics that distinguish organisms
Define: inherited traits
Physical traits transmitted to each generation
Who used pea plants to come up with the “principle ofdominance”
Gregor Mendel
Why did Mendel use peas?
- easy to find
- Easy to grow
- Self pollinate
What is cross-pollination?
Think back to vanilla hand pollination
Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma
Define: dominant trait
Characteristic always expressed if they carry that allele
Define: recessive trait
Charctenstic that is latent (present but inactive) only be expressed it only trait present
The principle of dominance states:
When indicisuals with contrasing traits are crossed, the offspring will only express the dominant trait if it is present in the gene
What is Mendelian ratio?
3:1
Law of segregation states:
Inherited traits are determined by pairs of “factors”. These ‘factors’ segregate in the gametes, with one in each gamete
Btw. Factors are genes’
Give example of homozygous
Using T and t
Alleles of the same
tt or tt
Give example of heterozygous
Using T and t
2 differing alleles
Tt
Purpose of punnett squares
To calculate probability of inheriting a particular trait
Mendelian ratio for genotype
1:2:1
Mendelian ratio for phenotype
