Du Huo (Tu Huo) (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix)

A

“self-reliant existence / angelica root”

Kd, Ub
Bitter, Acrid, Warm

*strong herb, treats painful obstruction in lower body, dispels ‘lurking wind’ in the Kd channel

  1. dispel WC-damp and alleviate pain: for painful obstruction especially in the lower back and legs. can be used for acute and chronic
    i. #1 for wind/cold/damp Bi (acute or chronic) esp in lower body
    ii. low back pain from lv/kd xu with wind/cold/damp
    iii. for swollen painful knees, legs
    iv. combined with qiang huo (taiyang HA) to treat pain in whole body
  2. release exterior for exterior wind cold together with dampness (qiang huo is stronger, use together)
  3. used for shao yin (lesser yin) stage headache and toothache

dose: 3-9g
c/ci: yin xu w heat, some hx of toxicity, worse with fresh root

*clears damp HEAT, facilitates fluid pathways, treats Bi
(could be in drain damp category)

  1. *promotes urination and reduces edema (esp in lower body), damp leg qi, gurgling ints,
    i. joint pain, joints that are hot to the touch
    ii. leg qi
  2. expels wind dampness and alleviates pain: or wind damp heat collecting in the channels (fever, red swollen hot painful joints)

Dose: 4.5-9g
c/ci: MJ xu, very cold and draining-not for xu patients, yin xu w/o DH. overdose can cause toxicity

**Wei Ling Xian (Clematidis Radix)

A

“awesome spiritual immortal / chinese clematis root”

UB (mobilizes all 12 channels)
Acrid, SALTY, warm

*strongly mobilizes all 12 channels to block painful obstruc. by dispelling wind, damp, and phlegm, and to soften areas of hardness

  1. dispel WD, unblock channels, alleviate pain, releases exterior AND promotes movement of qi in the channels. used alone or as pwd w warm wine for pain in low body
    i. disperses external wind, internally transforms damp extends to reach through all collaterals
    ii. FOR PAIN ALL OVER BODY enters all 12 channels
  2. FISH BONES stuck in throat
    i. single use with vinegar, 30g brown sugar
  3. reduces phlegm and pathogenic water (salty softens hard)
    i. difficult swallow disorder
    ii. focal (abd) distention and MJ phlegm and accumulation, gyn pain/masses/phlegm

c/ci: qi/xue xu, yang, mobilizing and drying, tends to exhaust qi

Qin Jiao (gentianae macrophyllae radix)

A

“curved from Qin country / large gentian root”

GB, LV, ST
bitter, acrid, sl cold

*dispels WD, eliminates tidal fever and steaming bone disorder (yin xu)

  1. dispels WD and soothes sinews and collaterals: for WD, especially in extremities. used for acute, chronic, cold, OR hot disorders. particularly suitable for HOT BI
  2. clears heat from xu: yin xu patterns that manifest with fever, incl. steaming bone (kd yin xu + fire)
  3. removes jaundice: due to DH (yang)
  4. moistens intestines and unlocks bowels: dry constipation. used to counteract drying qualities of other herbs that dispel WD

dose: 5-10g
c/ci: spleen qi xu with diarrhea or loose stools, frequent urination

*cools heat, dispels WD, stops itching, calms shen

  1. dispels WD, unblocks channels: for WD bi. unblocks and invigorates channels so its also commonly used for SPASMS and CRAMPS in the extremities, numbness, and weak legs, for after-stroke weakness
  2. clears heat, pacifiers the liver (liver heat): for LYR/HBP
  3. clears and transforms DH: sores, WD rash, itching. external or internal
  4. specific for Hypertension

*transf damp, harmonize sp/st, alleviates cramping
#1 for relaxing sinews
