Hai Tong Pi (cortex erythriniae)

A

“copper bark from the sea / coral bean bark”

Kd, Lv, Sp
acrid, bitter, neutral

*dispel WD, esp lower half of body, good for expelling pain

  1. dispels WD and unblocks the channels and collaterals: for WD painful obstruction, esp where there is soreness and pain in the lower back and knees, or spasms of the extremities
    i. WD bi with HEAT OR COLD (neutral temp)
  2. promotes urination, reduces edema: for superficial edema due to dampness
  3. treats itching skin lesions: used topically for scabies and other skin lesions
    i. topical in oil form - eczema, scabies, parasitic (ancients used on furniture to keep bugs from damaging wood)
  4. used as a gargle for toothache from tooth decay

dose: 6-15g
c/ci: none, c: with blood xu and non wind damp causes

Cang Er Zi (fructus xanthium)

A

“old ear seeds”
in warm acrid, release exterior category

LU
sweet, bitter, warm, toxic

*disperses wind, unblocks orifices, removes painful obstruction, eliminates damp qi from skin, treats sores

  1. disperses wind and dampness and opens the nasal passages: for any nasal or sinus problem with a thick, viscous discharge and related HA: one of the main herbs for DEEP SOURCE NASAL CONGESTION with HA, thick nasal discharge, loss of smell
  2. disperses wind and dispels damp: for wind damp painful obstruction or skin disorders with ITCHING (known for itching)
  3. dispels exterior wind as an aux herb for ext disorders with splitting HA that radiates to back of neck

dose: 3-9g
don’t eat with pork
c/ci: overdose can lead to vomit, abd pain, diarrhea

Hu Gu (Os tigris)

A

“tiger bone”

Lv, Kd
acrid, sweet, warm, salty

*obsolete
*searches out wind, stops pain, strengthens bones, settles spasms and convulsions

  1. dispels WD, stops pain, strengthens sinews and bones
    i. for WD bi, pain all over body, stiff joints
    ii. used when pain is not fixed in one place, and there are spasms of the legs and difficulty moving the joints

dose: 3-6g pill, wine, ext plaster
c/ci: blood xu with fire

Hai Feng Teng (piperis kadsurae caulis)

A

“sea wind vine / kadsura pepper stem”

*dispel wind dampness, opens collaterals

  1. dispels WD and unblocks the channels and collaterals:
    for WD cold bi with stiff joints, low back pain, sore knees, cramping muscles and sinews. also for internal pain from trauma

dose: 6-12g

Bai Hua She (agkistrodon seu bungarus)
/ Wu Shao She

A

“white flower snake”

sweet, salty, warm, toxic

*tracks down and eliminates wind (wind under skin, internal wind)

  1. powerfully unblocks channels and extinguishes wind (extinguish = internal lv wind) for chronic WD with numbness and weakness of limbs and cramping of sinews. generally used for stubborn cases
    i. for very severe WD cold bi
  2. dispels wind from skin: dermatosis, numbness, skin rash
  3. dispels wind from sinews and settles jitteriness and convulsions: for any kind of spasms, tremors, seizures. can be used for facial paralysis or hemiplegia due to wind stroke

dose: 3-10g, pwd 1-1.5g

Wu Shao She - sweet, salty, neutral, not toxic. similar function but weaker, more commonly used, weaker for pain, better for itching

Si Gua Luo (luffae fructus retinervus)

A

“silk melon, net of string melon / loofa / dried vegetable sponge”

sweet, neutral

*unblocks the collaterals, invigorates blood, transforms phlegm,
*in clear heat, resolve tox category

  1. resolves toxicity, reduces swelling: abscesses and other toxic sores. breast abscess, breast distention and lumps as well as insufficient lactation
    (doctrine of sigs: looks like breast tissue/collaterals)
  2. unblocks channels and collaterals while dispelling wind: for WD painful obstruction, soreness in the chest and flanks, pain and soreness in the muscles and sinews, stiffness in joings. useful when phlegm is part of the pattern also for traumatic injury
  3. expels phlegm: for cough due to heat in lungs with high fever, chest pain, sputum that is DTE. used in adults and children

dose: 6-15g as much as 20-30g for breast issues “melon food” not so strong summertime soup: clears SH and promotes urination with yi yi ren
