Mu Tong (Akebiea Caulis)

A

“Open ended pipe wood from Szechuan / wood passage”

UB, SI, HT
Bitter, Sl cold

*promotes urination, directs fire and DH down and out through the urine, facilitates lactation, unblocks blood stasis

  1. Promotes urination and unblocks painful urinary dribbling: for painful dribbling from DH in the bladder with dribbling, rough, and painful urination
    i. Lin syndrome (DH types)
  2. promotes urination and drains heat from Heart via SI : for such symptoms as irritability accompanied by sores of mouth or tongue, and scanty urine (UTI caused by Si heat, clears Ht fire)
  3. PROMOTES LACTATION and unblocks the blood vessels: for insufficient lactation; less commonly for amenorrhea
  4. Pain and stiffness in the joints
    i. DH/ancient/uncommon

Dose: 3-6g
*do not use Guan Mu Tong
C/ci: pregnancy, yin xu
Larger dosage can lead to kidney failure, beware.
Contains aristolochic acid, this herb has been put on danger list, however no such reports exist in Chinese literature.

Qu Mai (Dianthus Superbus)

A

“Bird wheat / chinese pink”

UB, SI, HT
Bitter, cold

*cools heat, directs downward, invigorates the blood; leads heat and fire in the Ht and SI out through the urine

  1. Promotes urination, unblocks painful urinary dribbling: for any type of painful urinary dribbling, esp painful bloody Lin, specifically DH types or blood Lin
  2. breaks up BLOOD STASIS : used as an auxiliary herb for blood amenorrhea/late menstruation due to blood stasis

Dose: 10-15g
C/ci: pregnancy NP, antagonizes Sang Piao Xiao

Bian Xu (Polygoni Avicularis herba)

A

“Flat water container / knotgrass”

UB
Bitter, Sl cold

*clears DH and facilitates urination

  1. Clears DH from bladder, promotes urination, unblocks painful urinary dribbling: for DH painful urinary dribbling (Lin), burning and painful (UB DH)
  2. KILLS PARASITES, STOPS ITCH
    i. Damp skin lesions / hemorrhoids
    ii. Intestinal parasites (tapeworm, hookworm, pinworm = 3 from DH)

Dose: 9-15g
C/ci: none but could injure yuan qi with overuse

Di Fu Zi (kochiae scoparis)

A

“Earth skin seeds / broom cypress”

UB (KD)
Sweet, bitter, Sl cold

*alleviates itching, removes DH, unblocks painful urinary dribbling, clears wind-heat affecting the eyes and head

  1. Clears DH and promotes urination (UB DH): for painful urinary dribbling due to DH accumulating in the bladder with dark, burning, and scanty urine
  2. EXPELS DAMP STOPS ITCH :used both internally and topically for damp skin disorders and other dermatological problems where itching is a major sx (eczema, scabies, DH in ext genitals)

Dose: 10-15g
C/ci: allergic rxns following oral application of the decoc have been reported in rate cases. Sxs include urticaria, pruritus, and vessicles on the mouth and lips.

Shi Wei (folium pyrrosiea)

*cools lungs above, facilitates the bladder below, halts bleeding due to heat

  1. Clears damp heat and unblocks painful urinary dribbling (Lin) (UB DH)
    i. Hot, stony, or bloody Lin
    a. #1 bloody Lin w other herbs
    b. Damp heat in LJ
  2. Clears heat, STOPS BLEEDING : for bleeding due to blood running reckless
  3. CLEARS LUNGS, EXPELS PHL stops cough
    i. For lung heat with cough and wheezing

Dose: 5-10g
C/ci: none, not for conditions without DH

*clears damp and phlegm

Bi Xie (dioscoreae hypoglaucae rhizoma)

A

“Lowly separating / fish poison yam rhizome”

UB, LV, ST
Bitter, neutral

*expels dampness, especially from LJ, separates pure from impure

  1. separates the pure from turbid : for resolving turbid dampness in the lower burner manifested in CLOUDY urine or vaginal discharge. Can be used for problems due to either XU OR DH
  2. Expels WIND-DAMP , relaxes sinews, unblocks collaterals: for WD or DH painful obstruction with low back pain, numbness or stiffness in lower extremities, or muscle aches. Mild effect
  3. Clears DH from skin: for DH skin lesions such as eczema and pustular sores (int or ext)

Dose: 10-15g

Yin Chen Hao (Artemiseae Scopariea Herba)

A

“Old moss / virgate wormwood”

LV, GB, SP, St (earth/wood)
Bitter, neutral (cool)

*#1 JAUNDICE

*treats jaundice by facilitating the removal of dampness and clearing heat

  1. Clears heat, resolves damp, reduces jaundice : principal herb for treating jaundice due to either DH or Cold Dampness. releases exterior/shaoyang
    i. #1 yin/yang jaundice
  2. Skin disorders: clears heat and facilitates the resolution of dampness: damp sores, wind rashes, skin diseases, lower body. Used alone of as ext wash

Dose: 10-30g
C/ci: jaundice due to qi, blood xu or blood stasis

Jin Qian Cao (Lysimachiae Herba)

A

“Gold money herb”

LV, GB, KD, UB (water/wood)
Sweet, SALTY, Sl cold

*promotes urination, expels stones, clears DH jaundice

  1. Promotes urination, unblocks painful urinary dribbling, expels urinary tract stones and biliary stones (UB/GB stones) —used in high doses as tea
  2. Clears DH in the LV/GB and expels GALLSTONES : for jaundice and/or red, swollen eyes due to DH as well as gallstones
  3. resolves toxicity and swelling: snakebites, abscess, traumatic injury — fresh, applied topically

Dose: 15-30g, 30-60g fresh (must double if fresh)
C/ci: large doses can cause dizziness/palps, decrease WBC, rashes, pruritus

Dong Kui Zi (dong kui guo) (semen malvae)

*promotes urination, benefits breast, moistens intestines

  1. Promotes urination, relieves Lin syndromes
  2. Edema during pregnancy with dry constipation (caution)
  3. promotes lactation esp due to qi stag and painful, swollen breasts
  4. Moistens intestines and unblocks bowels: adjunctive for constipation due to lack of fluids in intestines

Dose: 10-15g

C/ci: caution with pregnancy, diarrhea from sp qi xu

Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla)

A

“Lamb wick herb / juncis pith”

HT, SI , Lu
Sweet, bland, Sl cool

*clears heat in heart and lungs and directs downwards, unblocks the fluid pathways, leads heat downward and out through urine

  1. Promotes urination and unblocks painful urinary dribbling, for hot painful urinary dribbling and other heat d/o with dark, scanty, urine
  2. clears heart and DIRECTS FIRE DOWN : moves heat from heart channel down into SI where it is expelled through urine
    i. commonly used in CHILDHOOD SLEEP DISORDERS w dark scanty urine and irritability, esp at night. Can be stand alone for this
    ii. Also adults for insomnia or restless sleep due to lack of communication between heart and kidney (xu heart fire, xu kidney yin)
  3. Ancient use: “hou bi” external use (pwd) (throat inflammation

Dose: 1.5-4.5g very lightweight, usually 3-6g most
C/ci: none noted, possible cold patterns

Chao this herb to cool blood, stop bleeding

Hai Jin Sha (lygodium japonicum)

A

“Sea gold sand / lygopodium spore”

Sweet, bland, cold

*clears DH in the blood level of the SI and UB (taiyang) to alleviate painful urination

  1. Promotes urination, unblocks painful urinary dribbling, expels stones: for painful urinary dribbling of any type. Also useful for both Urinary tract and Biliary tract stones STONES
    -one of three “Jin’s” for stones
    -heat/stone/turbid/blood Lin
  2. Promotes urination, decreases edema, decreases jaundice
    i. Swelling due to sp dampness
    ii. DH jaundice

Dose: 6-12g pwd, wrapped in cheesecloth or filter
C/ci: overdose may cause side effects such as numb tongue, n/, dizziness, aversion to cold, urinary frequency
