Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Neoplasms Flashcards
What is a benign lesion of the liver, commonly associated with young women on oral contraceptives?
Liver cell adenoma
What viral disease is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma?
What are some other risk factors?
Hepatitis - HBV and HCV infection
Others:
- Chronic alcoholism → cirrhosis
Morphology of HCC?
- Hepatomegaly
- Paler than surrounding liver
- Single or multipe areas, diffusely infiltrative
How is HCC diagnosed
- Needle core biopsy
- Cytology
- Radiologically
What is the term for malignancy of biliary epithelium?
Cholangiocarcinoma
Risk factors for malignancy of biliary epithelium?
- PSC
- Chronic infection of biliary tree by flukes (Asia)
Morphology of cholangiocarcinoma?
- Mass
- Thickening and narrowing of bile ducts
- Adenocarcinoma
What is the most common cause of malignancy in the liver?
Metastasis from another site:
- GIT (portal vein brings blood from GIT straight to liver)
- Basically any others too
Most important type of pancreatic cnacer?
Pancreatic Duct Adenocarcinoma (PDAC)
Three types of benign and three malignant hepatobiliary neoplasms
Benign
- Haemangioma
- Hepatocellular adenoma (most common)
- Bile duct adenoma
Malignant
- Hepatocellular carcinoma
- Cholangiocarcinoma
- Hepatoblastoma
In which demographic/risk factor is liver cell adenoma often seen?
Common in young women on oral contraceptives
Complications of liver cell adenoma?
- Rupture
- Rare progression to HCC
HCC treatment options (3)
- Resection
- Transplantation
- Chemo/Radiation
