Heparins Flashcards
1
Q
Heparin SE
A
Heparin induced thrombocytopenia- recognised by skin allergy or if platelet count is reduced <30%. If this occurs stop and use an alternative
Hyperkalemia- Patients at greater risk include diabetic, renal failure, acidosis, increased potassium levels, taking potassium sparing drugs
2
Q
Monitoring of heparins
A
Platelet count before treatment (if using for more than 4 days then more regular)
Potassium levels before treatment (if using for more than 7 days then regular monitoring required)
3
Q
LMWH V heparins
A
LMWH preferred as they have longer duration of action
Once daily SC
Lower risk of heparin induced thrombocytopenia
