Water soluble beta blockers
CANS
(Celiprolol, Atenolol, Nadaolol, Sotalol)
Crosses the BBB less therefore less nightmares and sleep disturbance.
Cardioselective Beta blockers
A BIG MEAN NURSE ADMINISTERS
(Atenolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol, nebivolol. acebutalol)
Cause less bronchospasm
Long acting beta blockers
BANC
(Bisoprolol, Atenolol, nadaolol, celiprolol)
Given one daily whereas short acting bb are given 2-3 times a day
Intrinsic sympathomimetic activity
OAPC
(Celiprolol, Oxprenolol, Acebutalol, Pindolol)
They cause less coldness of fingers and toes and less bradycardia
Beta blocker CI
Bronchospams - if no alternative use cardioselective BB under specialist supervision
Side effects of Beta blockers
Bradycardia
Dry eye
Erectile dysfunction
Fatigue
Sleep disorders
Depression
Beta blocker OD and management
Can occur via IV injection causing excessive bradycardia with symptoms if dizziness, light headiness and syncope
Treatment: Atropine sulfate
Pregnancy and beta blockers
Avoid
Treatment cessation beta blockers
Avoid abrupt withdrawal as can cause rebound Myocardial Ischaemia
