Henry VIII’s coronation and marriage to Catherine of Aragon

Holy League - England, Papal States, Spain, HRE, Venice against France

San Sebastian- 12,000 troops sent along with Spain. Deserted by Ferdinand who used English troops to capture Navarre.
1513
Battle of Spurs- captured Tournai and Therouanne. Army of 30,000 provided by Wolsey and led by HVIII.
Battle of Flodden- Scots led by James IV attacked England. Success= reduction in Scottish nobility. Margaret (HVIII’s sister -regent now). Wars costed £960,000.

Anglo-French treaty because Ferdinand/ Maximillian/ Pope didn’t want to attack France anymore. Louix XII married Mary (HVIII’s sister) + given a pension and England kept Tournai.
1515
Louis XII dies and replaced by Francis I. Aims- image/glory and sent Scottish claimant, Duke of Albany to Scotland to try and overthrow Margaret.

Charles replaces Ferdinand who has died. Wanted to avoid conflict with France so signed Treaty of Noyon with them.

Peace of Cambrai- Spain/ France/ HRE- Henry isolated
1518
Treaty of London- diplomatic success= non-aggression between all major powers with England at the heart of it.
Anglo-French treaty- gave back Tournai + increased pension from France. Marriage treaty- Francis I and Mary.
1519
Death of Maximillian and Charles V replaces as HRE. England now a potential ally for France or Spain/HRE.
1520
Field of the Cloth of Gold- with Francis I + agreed to an alliance in principle
Treat of Gravelines- Charles V + Henry VIII agreed not to sign treaties with France for the next 2 years. New betrothal between Mary and Charles V was agreed to instead of marriage to French dauphin.
1521
HVIII- Defender of Faith because he wrote ‘Defence of the Seven Sacraments’ against Luther’s teachings
1523
Hapsburg-Valois conflict- England gets involved by supporting Charles V but Charles turned on HVIII within reach of Paris because of defeat elsewhere.
1525
Battle of Pavia- french army annihilated. Francis I taken prisoner and made peace with Charles V. England had to become friends with France now in order to counteract power of Charles V.
The Amicable Grant- forced loan on clergy and laity. Led to rebellion.
1526
love affair and infatuation over Anne Boleyn begins.
