henry vii- perkin warbeck Flashcards
what year was Perkin Warbeck affect Henry vii reign?
1491-1499
who did he pretend to be
pretended to be Richard Duke of York (one of the brothers in the tower) and brother to Elizabeth of York
how did this affect Henry vii
> effected his reign because the Duke of York was a better claiment to the throne considering his father was king.
Yorkist supporters and sympathisers could use this as an excuse. The Earl of Warwick (Lambert Simnel) was easily shown as fake but nobody had seen the Duke so no proof against Warbeck
how did this effect foreign policy with countries
(FRANCE)
~ Charles viii welcomed Perkin into court as the rightful heir of England after he gained no supporters in Ireland.
~ The Treaty of Etaples in 1492- ensured support for pretenders (Perkin) would be stopped and gave up all claims to French land apart for Calais.
Foreign policy (BURGUNDY)
= already a thin and difficult relationship because Margaret of Burgundy was Richard iii sister, and backed all Yorkist support and claims
= She deemed Perkin as her nephew and gave him stay in Burgundy after fleeing France.
= This put more tension on the relationship between Margaret and Henry and therefore resulted in difficulties in the cloth trade which England relied heavily on.
Foreign policy (SCOTLAND)
> The relationship with Scotland and England was extremely tense, they had no peace
Perkin went to Scotland where he was give support from James iv who married him to his cousin- gaining him entrance into the Scottish royal family.
This was a major risk for Henry as he was now the best claiment to the throne.
- This later stopped after the Treaty of Perpetual Peace in 1502 where Henry proposed marriage of his daughter Margaret Tudor to James iv
when and who else was executed
