why did he decrease the amount of nobles
> easier to control compared the vast amount of nobles who were powerful
by rarely elevating nobles to higher positions people saw it a reward and high honour
more nobles means less crown lands-less money towards the king and less money that he can control
what was the order of the garter
- gave individuals the highest rank of knighthood
- were given no extra titles or money
- closest followers were given the title compared to a peerage (earl, duke etc)
how did henry control strong wealthy nobles
~ kept powerful nobles estates- rarely given out as most of these families were extinct or being punished
~ controlled marriages- the joining of two powerful families could overthrow the monarch so needed permission in order to marry
~ given a fine if this nobles did not listen (£2000)
~ retaining of servants illegally meant surveillanced families were fined

- his father had fought alongside Richard III therefore Howard was a risk to Henry’s reign
- refused to leave the tower during the Simnel plot - given back titles such as maintaining law and order in the north
- given back attained land and slowly his titles and estates.
what are bonds and recognisances
- promised amount of money from peers as a form of remaining loyal to the king, a peer had give an amount of money to king, normally given duties to carry out as well. This form of loyalty was used to threaten nobles who Henry assumed not to trust. basically paying for their loyalty.
