The Pope was the only person who could dissolve the marriage because they were married in Catholicism.
Why was the pope not keen on divorce ?
He wasn’t keen on it because when you get married you state the words till death do us part and Henry was really only divorcing because Catherine didn’t provide a male heir not because abuse of something like that. Also in the Catholic Church if you get divorced you can not remarry in the catholic church or participate in Holy communion.
What did Henry do in response to the Pope’s decision?
Henry broke with the Catholic Church and mad himself the head of the new Church of England in 1534.
