Q

What was the name of Broca’s patient, and what was his condition?

16
Q

Who did Sperry use as participants?

A

11 patients who had a corpus callosotomy as a treatment for their epileptic seizures

17
Q

What three tasks were used to measure the visual fields?

A

Describe what you see, tactile tests and drawing tasks

18
Q

What happened when the picture was presented to the right visual field in the describing task?

A

The patient could perfectly describe what they saw

19
Q

What happened when the picture was presented to the left visual field in the describing task?

A

The patient could not describe what was shown and often reported that there was nothing there

20
Q

What happened when an object was placed into the right hand in the tactile task?

A

The patient could describe verbally what they felt or they could identify the test object presented in the right hand by selecting a similar appropriate object.

21
Q

What happened when an object was placed into the left hand in the tactile task?

A

The patient could not describe what they felt and could only make wild guesses. But, the left hand could identify a test object presented in the left hand by selecting a similar appropriate object.

22
Q

What happened when an object was presented to the right visual field in the drawing task?

A

The right-hand would attempt to draw a picture, but it wasn’t very clear.

23
Q

What happened when an object was presented to the left visual field in the drawing task?

A

The left-hand would consistently draw clearer and better pictures

24
Q

What was the conclusion made about the left and right hemispheres based on Sperry’s research?

A

The left hemisphere is dominant in terms of speech and language, while the right hemisphere is dominant in terms of visual-motor tasks/

25
What are some strengths of Sperry's research?
High degree of control = standardised procedures, research is replicable, high in reliability Applications = findings led researchers to conclude that severing the corpus callosum causes each hemisphere to acquire its own consciousness
26
What are some limitations of Sperry's research?
Small sample = participants made up a restricted population, difficult to generalise beyond the limited demographic Counter-argument = Some researchers argue that the two hemispheres are not separately conscious after surgery, and that consciousness is still shared across the brain
